It's a sad commentary on my Ministry work that the most satisfying and useful thing I did all week was arranging to have an incompetent intern fired.
Your gift was lovely and I look forward to using it for the purpose for which it is intended. Alas, I fear I'll need to altogether too often. Thank you for thinking of me.
I hope we're still on for dinner on Sunday.
Thank you for the handsome tipple and the crystal to drink it from. I hope you'll get to join me for a sip of it on Monday--scandalous or not.
It should be at least scandalous enough to be heard of in Mysteries, though.
I've a question to ask you when you've got a moment.
Yesterday was a terrible day, and particularly so for those of you who were present in the office during the attempted arrest of Max Wilkes. I know you've all been interviewed and signed off on things, so I'm only going to say that I'm very sorry you've all had to go through this. Also, I'd like to remind you that the Ministry has trauma counseling for those who witness events like yesterday's and that any of you who need to take advantage of it should do so.
If any of you need to speak to me about Friday's events, I've set aside some time Monday for that purpose. Please notify my assistant and she'll put you on my schedule.
I'm sorry I wasn't able to respond yesterday. I had Ministry Security and DMLE in and out of my office after things started and it was unsafe to write directly.
I don't believe I have information beyond what is already known to report. I have, of course, been interviewed due to my position in the chain of command, but I had no direct influence over Wilkes' hiring or assignments and the interviews appeared to be for completeness' sake.
I plan to join you for at least part of the evening, if we're still on.
I regret to advise that I've learnt this morning through a very short memorandum dated yesterday from Moll Smith at the DMLE that Rabastan Lestrange has been removed from WTF dispatch effective immediately.
There is no indication of why this decision was taken, nor of the reason for the timing. I have no indication of further suspicion or imminent arrest, but none the other direction either.
I'm very sorry. I wish there were something I could do. Hold steady; they may be trying to push you into breaking cover.
What's so funny, in a black humour kind of way, is that I could have written much the same rant about the progress into the murders of Dahlia and Christian, and that with my connections in the DMLE and the fact that Christian's father is a bloody senior Auror. I suppose it's good for Our Lord's overall plan that the DMLE is so incompetent, both in terms of what we can get by with, and in terms of the rot inside this place, but it's damned frustrating, and would be moreso if I didn't know I had my own opportunity to deliver some rough justice.
That thump you heard a few minutes ago was my assistant delivering the press inquiries about the dragon situation for you to handle. Write my speech, wind me up, and toddle me over to wherever I need to be, and with luck we'll both eventually see our beds tonight.
There's a bloody dragon loose over London. I'm going to be home late. Sorry.
I'm going to take on Zabini next week. I'd say "wish me luck" but I don't reckon there's much luck to it. How likely do you think it is that he can withstand the Imperius if it comes to that?
You all have my deepest sympathies in the matter of Raban. You have a difficult path in front of you; I wish you all strength as you travel down it.
I told you I'd likely not be asked to fight; and now we see why. The Lestranges will hold together, and so will we if the worst happens. But it won't.
Nicholas and I had been talking about pushing hunting back until May but with all this, I'm not sure what will happen. Rabastan was likely to be in the party but that's all up in the air now, and it may be easier to forgo the pleasure than to indicate anything by inviting him or failing to do so.
You see, I can occasionally manage judicious words on my own, without any handholding required.
Congratulations. If the goal of our work is to undermine the Ministry so it can't tie its own shoelaces without tripping over them, I think we've taken a significant step forward today.
I may die of sheer boredom if I have another meeting today.
I've just had an owl from Iolanthe today about some documents she needs to bring me in person, about that business we discussed while we were all visiting Juliet and Damon last month. I had meant to go to Rome to visit her, but I'm required to be present here at the time I'd meant to go. So we'll need to host her for a few days, if that's all right.
I'm not able to travel because of certain business that was discussed in the meeting last night. I'm sorry I had to leave, but I do have some good news. I'm not to be involved in the next action directly; it would be unwise for me to leave nonetheless.
I've also been talking to Nicholas about a hunting party on the grounds. Nicholas suggested Edmund and Hyacinth Nott and I'm also thinking Beatrice and Henry, and if there's anyone else you'd like to have, we could also ask them. Perhaps toward the end of the month, either the weekend of the the twenty-first or the twenty-eighth, whichever suits you better. I think, or at least I hope, by the end of the month, all this bloody Werewolf Capture Unit business will be over, and I'll be more than ready to handle some capturing of my own then.
Have you finally got a firm publication date for your book? We should start thinking about arranging things so you can do the necessary publicity.
I've had an owl from my sister. I'll have documents in hand by mid-month. Frank Zabini is ours.
Inferi in Diagon Alley? I have to wonder what the strategic value of this plan is. (ETA) And now I've heard. What a show of force that will be.
And speaking of strategic value--something came up while I was in Greece that could be explosive if it proves true. If there's nothing to it, I don't want to report it, because it's a scandalous accusation. But if I can get solid evidence of the charge, we might get a way into every investigation going on in the Ministry, even the ones you don't have access to right now. But keep it in the sleeve of your robe, because I don't want to get too far ahead of myself.
I've returned from Greece and will be going back to work on the rod project as soon as I clear up all outstanding business at the Ministry. I spoke with the gentleman you recommended in Athens, and he was very helpful. Thank you fo the introduction. Juliet and Damon also appreciated it as well, by the by, and send their thanks.
I think I've got a new angle on that rune I went the wrong way with last time. I'd appreciate a chance to discuss matters with you, but I assume it will need to be either before Thursday's business in Diagon or well afterwards. DMC will be in chaos along with the DMLE for a couple of days afterward, I imagine.
I'm sorry I missed Mothering Sunday, but I hope you had an excellent day without me and that Oscar and the children showered you with gifts and breakfast in bed and the like. Io and Cass joined us in Greece and all of the girls send their love. You and the children were much missed.
I've also got two books from Juliet, a box of kitchen witchery of all sorts, and photographs of all my nieces and nephews to show you. You won't believe how some of them have sprouted. I'll talk to Mona and we'll have dinner sometime soon so I can bring you your gifts.
I need you to stay out of Diagon Alley on Thursday evening. If you have to be down there, be finished with your business by five thirty, or six at the absolute latest. You need to find an excuse to make sure your sisters aren't there either; if you want to have them at the house, feel free. Just keep me posted on your plans, please.
I'm the worst cousin in the world. I can only plead the crisis in Hogsmeade as an excuse, and a poor one, for forgetting to ward you yesterday. I hope you had an excellent birthday and that Oscar treated you like a queen.
Mona and I are finally taking our trip to Greece this week. What can I bring you from the islands as a belated birthday gift?
I love you.
The news that the Order was trailing Dolohov is disturbing. I don't like to think that any of the people I work with could be Order spies, or that their agents are following me as I move around London, but anything is possible. I'm never going to forgive myself if I bring them here, accidentally, and something happens to Mona or the children.
Lucretia Prewett has asked us to dinner; we haven't set a date yet but I reckon it will be sometime in the next week or two if she's feeling up to it after the recent unpleasantness.
I'm sorry that I worried you so on Sunday. I hope I'll manage things better in the future.
Following the recent attacks on our colleagues, I've become extremely concerned about the safety of our employees, particularly in DMC but also in DMAC and DEP. I've spoken to the outside contractor who wards the warehouses of my company and also my residence, and he's agreed to discount his services to my Ministry groups under the Universal scheme. This will also give you priority in his schedule, which, after last night, may also be important. His details are below. I strongly urge you to contact him for at least a review of your home security.
[The name and address of Will's wardsmith is included.]
I'm aware this is an informal venue for this request, but I can take it to more formal channels if need be. One of my reports, Aloysius Max of DVS, has suggested to me after last week's attacks on DMC employees that we have an internal security breach leaking information to the Death Eaters. Max used to be in the DMLE, so I take his concerns particularly seriously. What do I need to do to facilitate an investigation and plug any leaks? I don't want any more of my people hurt or killed.
I've taken your observations about a possible leak to the DMLE and Ministry security. I took the liberty of mentioning your name, so you may be approached. You have my permission to cooperate fully and confidentially with any requests related to an investigation of leaks in DMC.
One of my reports who used to be in the DMLE pointed out to me on Friday that we may have a leak of confidential information about Ministry residences on our hands. I never think of these things because I imagine everyone who's anyone knows exactly where I live. I'm still working through the ramifications of this. I'd appreciate your advice on what to say other than "I've referred this to the DMLE".
Your participation in this particular sensitivity training exercise and your patience with it is duly noted and appreciated.
Your wish, as always, is my command.
I hope you can obtain Augustus' consent to participate as well.
Like you, I learnt of Hamish Ferguson's disappearance and that of his family last night. I know the Department is still in shock from Dunbar Maguire's death, and this is another heavy blow. However, the work of this Department must go on, and I trust in all of you to bring your best efforts to bear even under these devastating circumstances.
I strongly urge you to speak to your supervisors about Ministry counseling if you require it, and also to look into additional warding for your homes. Those of you who reported to Mr. Ferguson should speak to my assistant and I'll talk with you personally. Also, please refer paperwork requiring his signature to my office until further notice.
Be safe, all of you.
I could have done with another day of rest, but with the full moon starting tonight, there's too much to be done for me to skive off any longer, Mona's perfectly correct complaints about me burning the candle at both ends notwithstanding. I can't ask my people to do more than I'm willing to do and with the full moon coming tonight and the Dark Army on the move, and the news about that poor sod Maguire.
Having seen our Lord punished the Lestranges and Crouch for carrying out personal vendetta nominally in His name, I hope he does the same to Greyback and his pack. I can't see how that was anything different to what the Lestranges did. While I trust in the ultimate strength of the strategy He has chosen, I can't say I understand it or like this part of it. The Dark Army is full of filthy creatures and if it were not His will to use them, I should be perfectly happy if Crouch destroyed the lot.
You will have all heard the news about Dunbar Maguire and his family. Their deaths are a tragedy; they'll be greatly missed.
Information about the memorial services will be announced as soon as we receive it. Per departmental policy, you will all be excused to attend the service. Also, the standard arrangements for counseling have been made; please speak to your supervisor if you require any assistance.
I know I should still be home recovering, but I can't be spared any longer and I can't run three departments from my bed with my journal. I'm coming home early this evening, barring further disasters. I'd like to have dinner with you and Rosalind. If I'm called back afterwards, I'll at least have seen the two of you.
Thank you for your time and the use of your library Saturday. I found our discussion and a review of the books you recommended most helpful. The parallels you pointed out with the Mycenaean legends were particularly instructive. I'm working through matching the runic structures between the Mycenaean devices and the one I'm researching. I believe a breakthrough may be imminent.
